How is “natural” corn syrup made?
Recently, the Corn Refiners Association announced that they are launching a $30 million advertising campaign that is aimed at convincing consumers that High Fructose Corn Syrup (HFCS) is a natural compound. Four companies control 85 percent of the $2.6 billion business--Archer Daniels Midland, Cargill, Staley Manufacturing Co. and CPC International. They are the best people to field the answer to this question, so I went to them. I think twice about “natural” after spotting sulfur dioxide, a “solvent process” , being “washed” 8-12 times in cyclones, and then the corn goes through a process of different enzyme treatments to create the delicious solution that makes up way over 50% of our groceries stores products, here in in America. I am a health nut, and I know I have ingested gallons of that sweet processed goodness in my earlier days. The exact process can be found at OGFIT.com or http://corn.org/theprocess.htm. Please decide for yourself if you think that this process is suitable for human consumption, and if you want your children to eat this product. You are eating tons of it, now you can learn what it is. The movie King Korn further documents this industry.
